Poppy seed oil, also known as INCI name, Papaver Somniferum seed oil, is cold-pressed extracted from dried poppy seeds, yielding a light yellow liquid with a characteristic flavor profile and aroma similar to ground poppy seeds. Bulk poppy seed oil, commonly written as poppyseed, is used for culinary applications and cosmetic and personal-care formulations. Its naturally high-fat content, antioxidant properties, and fatty acids: linoleic, oleic, and palmitic acid, make this organic oil a desired ingredient in a wide range of formulations. In addition to the personal-care industry, poppyseed oil is used throughout art in oil painting.

Today, most artists’ color manufacturers substitute poppy seed oil or safflower oil for linseed oil in preparing specific pale oil colors and whites. Poppy seed, sunflower, and safflower oil can be safely used to make oil colors, such as light or pale colors, but they are not recommended for use as a painting media and should not be expected to replace linseed oil. These drying oils have little or no linolenic acid, a binder that gives a yellow tint to oil paint. The only binder in these oils is linoleic acid, which is less yellow and yellows less over time. However, some consider linoleic acid a weaker binder and should not be used as a replacement for linseed oil in all cases.
